Building the Overhead Panel

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

I began building the overhead panel for the flight simulator. I based the construction on the drawings I found on this excellent web site: http://users.skynet.be/jcordon/cockpit/index2.htm and pictures of the Boeing 737 cockpit. Most of the switches on the panel will be operational. My objective is to make it look as real as possible. All indicators will be illuminated. My panel will be a scale down version. A little smaller than the original. I am using 1/2″ Plexiglas to allow for transparency. I processed all the drawings in Adobe Photoshop and printed two version. One on sticker paper and the other version as a negative (inverted with the indicators colored) on transparency paper. After I finish laying out the complete panel I will cover it with another piece of transparent plastic, then drill the holes for the switches, install them and wire them.

Here are a couple of pictures of the initial layout:

    Hello

Can you please let me know how much you have spend building your homemade cockpit simulator? I am looking into building one for my 11 year old son who has taken an keen of flying. Do you have any resources of where I can go to start building one.

    Thanks

The cost will vary depending on how sophisticated/involved you want the Flight Simulator to be. I used a lot of recycled computer systems/parts/monitors/components. I began by sketching on a piece of paper how I wanted the simulator to look. I will recommend you a cockpit for two pilots so you can fly with your son. Before I began building the simulator I tested the parts/components: The computer setup with the monitors and the controllers. Then I began building the cockpit structure which is made of wood. It wasn’t that expensive to get the materials. I went to my local Lowes and I got the materials. I had to invest on some tools that I didn’t have. This was a fun project and it still is. After three years I keep making updates and improvements.
